mutual aid
Each day we build our pedagogy on a basis of adaptation to the rhythm and the needs of each one. To nourish this collective solidarity and the curiosity to learn, all students are invited to share with the group the fruit of their research in the form of theoretical presentations.

Shiatsu: a short story

Therapeutic massage from a long tradition was part of traditional medicine in Japan. After the Meiji era which saw the secular interruption of Japan's isolation, this medicine was confronted with Western medicine.
The second world war and the occupation of Japan accelerate the evolution.
The big schools are developing then (Namikoshi, Masunaga, Okuyama).
In 1955, shiatsu was recognized as a truly effective therapeutic method: "SHIATSU is a form of manipulation exercised with thumbs, fingers and palms, without the use of a mechanical or other instrument, by application of pressure on the epidermis, to correct internal dysfunctions, to improve and preserve health".
In 1964, shiatsu is recognized as an independent practice of massage.
Gradually Shiatsu wins the West.In 1997, Shiatsu was voted on favorably by the European Parliamentof Brussels (Lannoye-Collins Law, onnon-conventional medicine) andis one of the eight most effective and interesting(such as osteopathy, homeopathy or acupuncture - Report A4-0075 / 97).

Shiatsu: what is it?

Shiatsu (指 圧, literally "finger pressure") is a manual, energetic and holistic therapyofJapaneseorigin, distinct frommassage.
This manual care technique was born from the alliance of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Japanese manual care and Western science in anatomy and physiology. In Shiatsu, precise pressure is applied, mainly with the thumbs, along the acupuncture meridians, as well as stretching, pressure of the palms, percussion ...

Shiatsu supports and strengthens the body's natural ability to maintain and restore health. Thus his goal is not only in physical and nervous relaxation, although a session participates; it will also aim for a physiological, emotional and psychological balance.
The benefits of a session of Shiatsu can relate to a rather wide range of imbalances, among which stress, mental agitation, pains and stiffness of the back, disorders of the digestion, insomnia, muscular contractions, joint problems menstrual disorders, depression ...
It is an ideal tool to accompany the particular periods of life, professional and personal evolutions, pregnancy, postpartum, rehabilitation, great stress etc.
Shiatsu can not under any circumstances remove the person from a follow-up and a medical diagnosis in case of problem. Its action is first preventive, and promotes balance in everyday life.
Shiatsu is recognized by the Ministry of Health as "unconventional medicine worthy of interest. Some mutuals already pay for shiatsu care.

Shiatsu: the main styles

Namikoshi shiatsu, widely used in Japan, based on Western-style anatomy,
Le shiatsu médical Koho (Imperial, Kōhō?) Du professeur Ryūhō Okuyama (Okuyama Ryūhō) au sein de l'institut Hakko Ryu,
The shiatsu Masunaga. Shizuto Masunaga (増 永 静 人), opens traditional Chinese medicine to shiatsu. This shiatsu is sometimes called Zen Shiatsu in the West,
Shiatsu Yin, therapeutic shiatsu developed by Master Takeuchi Nobuyuki;
And many others…
Almost every teacher has a vocation to gradually develop a style of his own. Shiatsu developed in Qiseido School has its roots in Koho Shiatsu. The school has links with this original shiatsu and the Japanese representatives of the Hakko Ryu Dojo (School of the 8th Light).
In the school are also present notable influences of other styles, such as Masunaga (see the seminar of July 2017), Kurétaké with Okamoto Sensei, or shiatsu Yin.

Shiatsu today: the session in the office

Shiatsu is aimed at the entire population, and at all ages. Older people are cared for with their ability to move (often shiatsu sitting rather than lying on the floor). Pregnant women may receive a shiatsu session by a qualified practitioner.

Traditional shiatsu is ground or sitting. The person remains dressed, preferably with light clothing facilitating contact with the body.
In practice the practitioner applies pressure, stretching and support by means of the palm of his hands, elbows or fingers, including thumbs. He uses points and courses on the meridians of acupuncture according to the needs.
Shiatsu limits and contraindications
Shiatsu is not a technique yet validated as medical; consulting a doctor is therefore essential in the context of pathologies or trauma.

Shiatsu is a gentle manual technique that does not include cons-indications of common sense (postoperative complications, open wounds, serious pathologies in medicine and surgery).
Contact a certified professional, especially well trained
The shiatsu practitioner's profession is focused on healthy prevention and wellness. It is recommended to contact a certified professional after a complete training and applying a code of ethics.

In France, the French Traditional Shiatsu Federation (FFST) offers practical and theoretical training for at least three years. At the end of the training, she issues the shiatsu practitioner certificate.

It also has a directory of professionals by region.

Note that various professions related to health enrich their profession by shiatsu technique: beauticians, auxiliaries, medical, nurse, physiotherapists, psychologists or psychotherapists, doctors.

It is therefore essential to learn about the experience and training of the practitioner, to ensure the good practice of shiatsu techniques.
Duration and price of a shiatsu session
A shiatsu session usually lasts one hour at a cost of about 60 to 80 euros.

Shiatsu is not reimbursed by Medicare. However, some mutuals offer refunds.

TCM: Traditional Japanese Sino Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) goes back thousands of years. It is a "system", based on a set of theories (explanations) and practices (techniques) concerning the man and his health. For a Westerner it presents a relative complexity:
  • A specific philosophical and symbolic basis, original
  • the body, the heart and the spirit are an inseparable whole
  • It is relative, nothing is seen as static, as the living. His teachings come not from the dissection of corpses, but from the observation of the living
  • the health of an organ or a person depends on multiple factors all related to each other
  • Many common terms are used in a different sense from that of the West
Traditional Chinese Medicine uses 5 main practices. Each is presented in more detail in our sheets:
  • Energy exercises, such as Qi Gong, taichi, or Japanese taiso
  • Massages (tuina and shiatsu)
  • Dietetics
  • Acupuncture and moxibustion
  • The pharmacopoeia (medicinal herbs)
The main goal ofTraditional Chinese Medicine is to maintain healthandprevent disease. By acting on weak signals, it acts on an imbalance before it gets worse. TCM can also act on most health problems, acute or chronic. Beyond an efficiency on the traditional pathologies, it has quite interesting results on the diseases of more modern civilization (stress, spasmophilia, fibromyalgia, etc.), cutaneous disorders, musculoskeletal, neurological, digestive, respiratory, genital , hormonal, infections and emotional problems.
Healthderives from the maintenance of theharmonyof energy and its circulation within the body as well as between the body and the external elements. It is linked to the body's ability to maintain the momentum needed to cope with aggression. Thediseaseoccurs when the body has lost its ability to adapt.
Japan has enriched TCM with its own experience; notably resulting from the practices of the martial arts and the masters of arms. Shiatsu is an example of this, combining knowledge of TCM with practices from anma massages and dojos.
